ABSTRACT

For many understandable reasons, education gets utmost emphasis. It enables people to choose the right one after differentiating wrong and right. It also enables people to understand the present situation after analyzing the information of the past and people can easily fashion their future in a correct way. This is clearly spelled out in the first revelation of the Qur‟an which enjoins upon mankind to “Read!! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read!! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught people that which s/he knew not” (al-Qur‟an, 96: 1-5). A nation‟s level of progress can be gauged easily through its education system; besides it would be possible to predict how civilized it is. Education is considered as one of the most important indicators of development and civilization. In Bangladesh, there are three different ways to receive education: informal, non-formal and formal education. It has its latest education policy also. The country has made notable progress in terms school attendance and passing rates but the quality of education is still out of track. The educational system is producing manpower which is not qualified enough in terms of values and morals. The behaviors and activities of students and teachers as well are questionable in all respects. The society is becoming demoralized day by day. In this backdrop, the main objective of this article is to analyze the term education, its aims and contemporary education system of Bangladesh in the light of Islamic norms and values. For this, various books, documents and research findings have been analyzed and used as secondary sources. At the end, it has been tried to give some recommendations, which will be benefited, to policy makers and thinkers for further work in this field.
